The Golf Swing – How to Grip the Golf Club Part 1

welcome to the grip 101 video now this isn’t
your conventional video or instructional piece on the grip so keep watching if you are thinking
to yourself i know everything about the grip conventionally you’re gonna see a lot of the
instruction talk about having the v’s of your hand pointing to a certain shoulder show this
many knuckles stronger to hook it weaker it’s not as simple as that it’s more complicated
but there is a simpler means to gripping it correctly every time so in the short run all
the other systems that are taught to grip the club don’t work the reason being is cause
it takes a long time to really dial in having the ball in the perfect position the grip
perfect every single time small changes can mean a hook or slice when you don’t intend
it and i’ll demonstrate all that in just a second so easier way to do it is simply simulate
impact prior to hitting the ball what i mean by that is if i’m gonna set up i’ll grip my
club like most people do beforehand give it some waggles whatever it is your pre shot
routine is as i set up we see my hands are ahead which is how i like to set up you don’t
have to necessarily have your hands ahead you can have a straight shaft with your hands
behind what i’m gonna do next is simulate impact so i open my hips slightly and i’m
gonna press my hands forward so if we do this the clubface is way closed for it to be square
you might not be able to see it because you’re not right on top of for it to be square my
ball would have to be back here so this grip based on my swing and my impact position is
meant for a ball position that is way back there if i’m trying to hit it straight what
we need to do is weaken the grip in our hand and there we go pretty much a still could
be weaker a little bit cause that’s way up in my stance this is gonna give you a this
is a 7 iron it’s going to give you a very high 7 iron if you want to change your trajectory
move the ball back adjust your grip simulate impact again that’s pretty square right there
and you can even just move your feet until it squares up although the difference is you’re
going to have to adjust your path as well the further back in your stance the ball gets
the earlier you’re going to be hitting the ball the more you’re going to be coming or
tending to come from the inside so keep that in mind there are some advantages to having
the ball back in your stance as you’re gonna see distance and it cuts through the wind
but having the same ball position like ben hogan always said keep that ball position
the same i think he did at least now i’m second guessing myself so let’s demonstrate first
things first i’m going to grip too strong so if i want the clubface square it’s about
an inch to two inches behind the ball although i can set up and make it square when i simulate
impact it’s actually closed so what happens is that even though it looks square from the
get go when you hit it it produces a big hook and the longer the club the worse that hook
is going to be or rather the shorter the club sorry so not ideal i do want to play a high
shot we got the target set at 186 we’re not going for that yet we’re going for about 173
that’s a 7 iron ball in front of my stance i’m gonna weaken my grip simulate impact until
it squares up that’s a little closed still much better so again just adjusting the grip
in my hands we see a nice high flight with a 7 iron small miss to the left that’s completely
manageable and then about the 170 mark if i want to hit it 186 which is where the target
is i need to get this ball further back in my stance so i need to strengthen my grip
simulate impact find pretty much around center then make some practice swings we change the
ball position like i said you’re changing path so make some practice swings to get a
feel for it that one’s you can see a lower trajectory might’ve spun it a bit too much
so a couple yards short 183 instead of 186 completely reasonable right on target you
see the misses are much smaller barely left and barely right as opposed to that big hook
so that’s how you minimize your misses you set up with the perfect grip every time by
simulating impact just like bryson dechampeau does very simple effective manner to do things
you can move the ball around you can change your trajectory if you want to hit a hook
you’ll know if you’re set up in the right way to do it it’s much simpler than trying
to set up with your v’s pointed at each shoulder every time and then trying to get that ball
position the same simulate impact ok that’s where my ball position needs to be i can move
my feet depending where the ball is and then get yourself set up simple effective if you
like it hit the like button comments if you have any comments or want to see a specific
topic covered by all means post some comments and last but not least please share social
media is huge right now and these are some small facets of the game that make a huge
impact but at least from what I’ve seen through online instruction and different instructors
haven’t been covered yet so by all means share this with friends you think would benefit
from it we’re all in this together as i guess you could say uhm you know golf is a really
tough game so anything to improve can help uh thanks as alway for watching and have a
