Golf Pro Tip: Tight Goes Right Grip Pressure

HI. MY NAME IS MARIA BROOKS, AND I’M AN LPGA
TEACHING PROFESSIONAL AT THE VILLAGES GOLF ACADEMY. AND I’M GOING TO GIVE YOU A QUICK TIP ON
YOUR GOLF SWING, BASICALLY YOUR GRIP, AND HOW WE WANT TO HOLD A LITTLE LIGHTER WITH
YOUR DOMINANT HAND. I HAVE A SAYING THAT TIGHT GOES RIGHT. SO IF YOU’RE A RIGHT-HANDED GOLFER, AND
YOU’RE SQUEEZING TOO TIGHT WITH YOUR RIGHT HAND, THAT IS GOING TO KEEP THE CLUB FACE
OPEN DURING YOUR SWING AND THE BALL WILL SLICE TO THE RIGHT. IF YOU’RE A LEFT-HANDED GOLFER, IT’S THE
SAME THING. IF YOU’RE GRIPPING TOO TIGHT WITH YOUR LEFT
HAND, THE BALL WILL GO TO THE LEFT. SO WHEN YOU TAKE YOUR GRIP, WE WANT TO GRIP
WITH YOUR LEFT HAND, OR YOUR NON-DOMINANT HAND, PUT YOUR DOMINANT HAND BELOW, AND KEEP THE THUMB AND
THE FOREFINGER, LIGHTER PRESSURE. WE DON’T WANT TO HAVE THE THUMB ON TOP,
AND THEN WHEN YOU SWING, THE CLUB FACE IS GOING TO OPEN ON THE BACKSWING, AND IT’S
ALLOWED TO CLOSE ON THE FORWARD SWING. IF YOU GRIP TOO TIGHT WITH YOUR THUMB ON TOP,
WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN IS, YOU’RE GOING TO SWING AND THE TIGHT RIGHT HAND IS GOING
TO KEEP THE CLUB FACE OPEN AT IMPACT, AND WHEREVER THAT TOE IS POINTING, THE BALL WILL
GO OFF TO THE RIGHT. ALRIGHT. SO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR DOMINANT HAND HAS LESS
TENSION, ESPECIALLY IN YOUR THUMB AND YOUR FOREFINGER, SO THAT WHEN YOU TAKE YOUR SWING
THE CLUB FACE CAN CLOSE AND THE BALL CAN GO STRAIGHTER. THANKS FOR JOINING US.
