Golf Course Flags
| The flags listed below are in order of their ranking by Golf Digest [2003-2004 Ranking]
1. Pine Valley One of the most exclusive, most difficult, and most popular courses in the world. This is the flag currently used at Pine Valley. The flag is embroidered with the logo on both sides. This is one of the few current used flags that you will see with brass grommets on the left side. Almost all flags nowadays have a plastic tube on the left side. Apparently Pine Valley isn't too interested in the latest technological advances. The flag comes with a tag from Eagle One Golf Products on back.
This screen printed Pine Valley flag was used in 1998/1999. It has a Standard Golf tag on back.
This screen printed flag was used at the 1985 Walker Cup. This was the last major tournament that Pine Valley hosted. The flag has a Standard Golf tag on back.
While this flag doesn't have the Pine Valley logo, this flag was made for a match between members of Pine Valley and members of Bel Air Country Club. The flag is embroidered with the name of Ernest Ransome, who was President of Pine Valley at the time of this tournament in 1988. Mr. Ransome's signature was a great addition to this rare flag.
This used flag is from the 1991 Ransome Tournament, named after former Pine Valley president Ernest Ransome, who started the tournament.
2. Augusta National The holy grail of used course flags. This is surely number 1 on everyone's wish list. Authentic ones rarely ever come up for sale. Beware! There are lots of fakes out there. The authentic flag is screen printed and comes with the plastic tube on the left and a Standard Golf tag on the back. Don't buy one that is missing the tag and has no indication of ever being connected to the tube. Remember, in order to remove the tube, the flag would have to be damaged. Most people don't realize that the tube is sewn onto the flag in several places. This yellow Augusta National flag is used on the course during regular play for members, and is also used on the Par 3 course. It is also used on the main course during the practice rounds of Masters week, except for the 18th hole, where a Masters flag is used.
3. Cypress Point - Cypress Point uses a green and white checkered flag with no logo. This is "tradition" at Cypress Point. I have talked with members of the grounds crew and they don't believe that any flag with the Cypress Point logo has ever been used. 4. Oakmont C.C. - Oakmont doesn't currently use a logo'd flags (they use solid red flags) - but they used to. This flag was used by Oakmont in the late 1980s. Obviously, this flag is rare and is one of the most valuable used course flags around.
5. Pebble Beach - Pebble Beach uses solid yellow flags with no logo. Being a public course and one of the most well known courses in the world, too many flags were taken home as souvenirs, so Pebble is sticking with the blank flags. 6. Shinnecock Hills G.C.
7. Merion G.C. - Merion uses red wicker baskets instead of pin flags. This was derived from an old Scottish tradition. Back when the game was just beginning some golfers believed that being able to see which way the wind was blowing on the green was an unfair advantage. Therefore, a couple hundred years ago some courses in Scotland used wicker baskets atop the pin instead of flags. This practice was brought to America and made famous by Merion. Merion wicker baskets are nearly impossible to obtain. They are made by hand and never allowed to leave the club.
8. Oakland Hills C.C. The flag is white with a green trim and has a one-sided embroidered Oakland Hills logo in the middle. The flag has a Prestige Flag tag on the back. The flag has a plastic tube on the left side when used on the course, but the tube has been cut out of my flag. This flag was used in 2002 at Oakland Hills. The plastic tube was cut from the flag before it was given to me.
9. Winged Foot G.C. - Info Coming Soon 10. Oak Hill C.C. - No information available at this time 11. The Country Club - No information available at this time 12. Pinehurst #2 - All of the Pinehurst courses use the same flags. 3 different colored flags are used depending on pin placements. The putter boy logo is in the center of the flag
This flag is from several years ago. Pinehurst is currently using checkered flags.
13. Medinah C.C. The flag is screen printed and has a standard golf tag on back. The left side is sewn onto a plastic tube. This flag was used at Medinah in 2002. I assume that Medinah uses 3 different colored flags to indicate pin placements, but I am not sure.
This flag was NOT the one used at the 1990 U.S. Open. The owner of this flag received it as an award from a Hale Irwin sponsored golf tournament. My guess if that Hale Irwin had these replica flags produced after he won the tournament.
14. Seminole G.C. - Seminole uses a yellow flag with an embroidered course logo in the center. 15. Southern Hills C.C. - Southern Hills uses a yellow and blue flag that is made by Southern Flags. They have used this particular flag since approximately 1999 . 16. The Olympic Club
